All you need to know about Denmead

A village in Hampshire with a population of over 6,000, Denmead is situated close to Waterlooville and on the doorstep of the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park. The ominously named Worlds End is the next village along.

In essence, it’s still a very rural village, but there have been plenty of new housing developments in recent years with the prospect of more to come. Denmead is being swallowed up more and more by Waterlooville, but still retains much of its villagey character.

It’s popular among commuters, those looking for more affordable properties and families with young children (the village is home to Denmead Infant School and Denmead Junior School, as well as a local scout group, a village skate park and the Denmead Youth Theatre).

Property in Denmead is mostly made up of large detached homes, semi-detached properties, bungalows, flats and apartments. A one or two-bedroom flat is likely to set you back £130,000-£190,000, while larger detached, semi-detached and terraced homes can be purchased for around the £250,000 mark.

Things to do

Denmead has a small high street – home to a number of local shops, a Co-op, a small Boots pharmacy, the 19th century All Saints church and The White Hart pub. Nearby Waterlooville has plenty of shopping and leisure facilities at its disposal, too.

For those into their golf, Furzeley Golf Course and Denmead Driving Range are on hand to provide an afternoon’s entertainment, while the Forest of Bere and Staunton Country Park will keep people of all ages and demographics happy. Havant Leisure Centre is approximately five miles away and is the perfect place to take kids in the school holidays.

As well as the delightful Forest of Bere – which offers ample walking and cycling routes in wooded, scenic surroundings – the South Downs is also on the doorstep. A gem at any time of the year, it particularly comes into its own in the summer months, when it becomes the ideal day out for all the family. Walking, cycling, picnics, pub lunches – whatever it might be, a great time for all is assured.

Food & drink

It’s country pub central around here, with three excellent ones in the village and its surrounding areas alone. The Fox & Hounds is the pick of the bunch, offering high-quality pub grub, superb beer, friendly service and a relaxed, laid-back ambiance.

The White Hart, meanwhile, is the very definition of a traditional, quintessentially British country pub, with excellent ales, tasty food and stylish, stripped-back décor.

The Harvest Home is another excellent choice – with freshly-cooked Sunday roasts its speciality – while Denmead’s Finest Fish & Chips comfortably lives up to its name.

What’s more, The BakeHouse is a brilliant local café and bakery, serving up full English breakfasts, cakes, paninis, burgers, toasted sandwiches, cooked rolls and jacket potatoes.

On Hambledon Road, meanwhile, you can find Chinese takeaway Lucky Star and Barnard’s Coffee House & Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in intimate, chic surroundings.

The Forest of Bere, too, is a lovely, characterful pub with good ales, friendly staff and unbeatable, locally famous pies. It also operates an Indian takeaway service from upstairs!

The area is well-served by local buses and the road links to Waterlooville, Havant, Emsworth and elsewhere are excellent.

The nearest train stations are Havant, Bedhampton and Cosham, with services to Portsmouth, London, Southampton, Brighton and Cardiff Central.

Southampton Airport is also a 28 minute drive away.
