All you need to know about Hilsea

A district of the city of Portsmouth, Hilsea is located at the north end of Portsea Island and has a population of more than 13,500.

Largely residential, Hilsea is popular among commuters given its closeness to Portsmouth, Havant, Waterlooville and Fareham.

Property here is mostly comprises detached, semi-detached and terraced homes, as well as town houses, flats, maisonettes and new-build apartments. You can expect to pay around £180,000 for a good, well-sized three or four-bedroom terraced house, amply highlighting that homes in Hilsea are towards the much more affordable end of the market.

Larger properties also offer excellent value – six-bedroom town houses and four-bedroom terraces can be on the market for as little as £425,000-£450,000.

Things to do

Portsmouth’s biggest and most popular sports and leisure facility – the Mountbatten Centre – is located in Hilsea. It has hosted national and international sporting events in the past and includes two swimming pools, a fitness suite, a health suite, an athletics track, a cycle track, tennis, squash and netball courts, dance studios, an all-weather pitch and a café.

A short walk from Hilsea station and you will find Portsmouth Rugby Football Club, while Portsmouth FC’s famous old ground, Fratton Park, is easy to reach. Nearby green space is provided by Alexandra Park, The Admiral Park and Hilsea Bastion Gardens.

Portsmouth, of course, has many attractions, with The Mary Rose Museum, HMS Warrior 1860 and HMS Victory particular highlights. For anyone interested in Britain’s naval or maritime history, Portsmouth is pretty hard to beat.

For the kids, meanwhile, Portchester Castle and a day out by the seaside at Hayling Island or the Isle of Wight are excellent.

Port Solent, with its range of restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment options, is a great place to spend an evening, while Old Portsmouth comes alive when the sun is out – its pretty streets and interesting buildings make it a great place for a wander.

In truth, there is too much on offer in Portsmouth to detail here. It’s a place where a ‘discover as you go’ approach is highly recommended.

Food & drink

Coach & Horses, part of the Flaming Grill brand, is a family-friendly, reasonably priced establishment with excellent pub grub on offer.

Elsewhere, Casa Sarda is a lovely Italian deli and café serving up top-quality antipasti, stone-baked pizzas, filled baguettes and an authentic Italian breakfast. Coffee, as you would expect, is also a highlight.

For South Asian cuisine, meanwhile, Masala Room and Bombay Bites are the best places in town, while Green Posts and The Phoenix Ale House are both great places for a cheeky pint.

There is easy access to Portsmouth and the other major surrounding areas, with road, bus and rail links all strong.

Hilsea railway station provides services to Portsmouth Harbour, Southampton Central, Brighton, London Waterloo, London Victoria and Littlehampton, while Southampton Airport is a 20 minute drive away via the M27.
