All you need to know about Sholing

The district of Sholing is located on the eastern side of Southampton, placed between the similar local areas of Bitterne, Thornhill and Woolston.

Although there are various explanations for the origin of its name, the most popular belief is that ‘Sholing’ derives directly from the Anglo-Saxon phrase for ‘hill on the shore’.

Having officially become part of Southampton in 1920, the village has thrived in the 20th century since it avoided significant damage in World War Two – despite the fact it was the first area to receive a ‘flying bomb’ with thankfully no fatalities.

Sholing FC have been established in the area since 1894, with their former names including Thornycrofts FC and Vosper Thornycroft FC – the team assumed their current name in 2010 along with the nickname of ‘the Boatmen’.

The fantastic Sholing Common is a beautifully relaxed part of the village that includes the scenic area of Miller’s pond, which is now home to the Sholing Valley Study Centre – an environmental group that have a keen interest in the local wildlife. Since 2011, the common has been designated a Local Nature Reserve.

St Mary’s Church is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Southampton and as a result, it has become the mother church of the local area. Despite its interior being destroyed during the Southampton blitz in 1940, the church stands proud today thanks to a rebuild programme that was completed in 1954. A simply stunning structure that stands out as Sholing’s jewel in the crown.

From a property perspective, you are mainly looking at detached, semi-detached and terraced homes, as well as flats in old council housing and various new-build developments. Prices for terraced homes fall into the affordable bracket for buyers, with an average property price of around £185,000 with detached properties reaching upwards of £250,000.
